The PC industry has officially changed. When Always On, Always Connected Windows 10 PCs powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon started shipping to consumers in 2018, it kicked off a radical transformation of an industry that many considered stagnant and seriously lacking in innovation. We have committed decades of research to mobile devices and developed an expertise in delivering premiere smartphone capabilities, and now we’ve invested in bringing the best of our mobile technology to a new platform, built from the ground up, for always on and always connected1 PCs.
In just 18 months, our customers launched a growing number of modern designs powered by our premium-tier Snapdragon compute platforms. They’re now selling through consumer and enterprise channels around the globe. More importantly, we’re excited by how these devices are changing the way people use their PCs. With up to multiple days of battery life, robust and blazing fast connectivity, and thin, sleek designs, end users are reaping the benefits of untethered productivity with PCs that can finally keep up with their mobile lifestyles.
But Always On, Always Connected PC experiences should not just be for premium devices. With that view in mind, Qualcomm Technologies looked to how we can continue to expand how we’re improving customer experiences and making computing better. Last month at our annual Snapdragon Tech Summit, we introduced , creating a complete Snapdragon compute portfolio to address entry-level, mainstream, and premium mobile PCs with the , , and compute platforms, respectively. With these purpose-built PC platforms, we’re taking these premium experiences to more price points and performance levels with our OEM partners. We believe that everyone deserves a modern PC experience that is always updated thanks to always being connected, has instant-on capabilities to be ready to go when you are, and has incredibly long battery life and secure, lightning-fast cellular connectivity. We believe there needs to be a Snapdragon for everyone.
So, what does this mean for the PC ecosystem and, more importantly, for end users? Let’s dive a little deeper into the technology and use cases it will enable.
The entry-level Snapdragon 7c and mainstream Snapdragon 8c compute platforms utilize the Qualcomm Kryo CPU, Qualcomm Adreno GPU, and Qualcomm AI Engine to deliver amazing performance with up to multi-day battery life2. This means up to 25 hours of continuous power, which is up to 2x longer than current PCs. Connected standby allows your system to go to a very low power state while maintaining a network connection to keep you updated, just like your smartphone. It can even extend battery life to weeks. Snapdragon compute platforms also deliver powerful and efficient AI acceleration for modern experiences to premium devices, and also to the entry and mainstream product tiers — enabling experiences not possible with traditional CPU and GPU solutions. Take all of this and you have a set of new, unique, and innovative user experiences in tiers of products that didn’t exist before.
One of the key segments we’re excited to address is education, where the Snapdragon compute platform can enable:
We’re delighted to see the rapid momentum and excitement for these new platforms. At CES 2020, based on our Snapdragon 8cx 5G compute platform. We also shared many additional partners who are already designing on the new Snapdragon 7c and Snapdragon 8c compute platforms, such as ASUS, Compal, Huaquin, IAC, Lenovo, Quanta, Wingtech, and many more. Today, at , the Turn Connect and Wise N1212 designs using the Snapdragon compute platform. This is a major milestone and one that shows great interest in our Snapdragon compute platforms for education.
This need for long battery life and robust connectivity will also gain traction in the enterprise as cloud computing continues to grow exponentially. As we move to a more cloud-based, collaborative approach to living, working and creating, you need to be connected in order to be a participant. From frontline workers using entry tier devices for quick and easy access to enterprise executives who need thin-and-light, always on, always connected modern devices, Snapdragon compute platforms are scaling to redefine what’s expected from every tier. There’s now a Snapdragon for everyone. And we can’t wait to see how our platforms continue to transform the PC industry and change the way we use our computers.
Stay tuned for more exciting news to come at MWC!
